    5 hairstyles for long hair

Are you looking for new ideas for hairstyles for long hair? Consider these hairstyles. Whether you prefer a relaxed look or something more structured, there are plenty of options for a beautiful hairstyle for long hair. Loose and wavy hair is a classic that suits all face shapes and requires minimal maintenance. This look is perfect for everyday wear as it is both simple and elegant. If you need more structure in your look, try different braids – from the traditional braid to half braids or a fishtail look. Braids are a great way to add texture and depth to your hair, and they can be tailored to any occasion. You can see our extensive guide to braids here.

A simple way to give your ponytail a twist is by wrapping a small section of hair around the hair tie and securing it with a pin. This little trick can transform an ordinary ponytail into a stylish hairstyle for long hair. You can also experiment with curls – create beautiful soft waves using guides or stripes before styling the ends straight. If you want extra volume, try creating a voluminous braided bun using wax, gel, and other hair products. With these tips, you can easily achieve an impressive hairstyle for long hair without having to go to the hairdresser each time!

    1. Loose and wavy hair

Create a relaxed look with loose and wavy hair. This hairstyle is perfect for those who want an easy and quick setup that still looks stylish. Loose and wavy hair is a versatile hairstyle for long hair that can be casual for daily wear and sophisticated for more formal events.

To achieve wavy hair, you can use heatless curls, a curling iron, or a straightener to create soft waves in your long hair. If you prefer a more natural look, you can also sleep with braids overnight to get the perfect waves without heat. A good hairspray can help keep the hairstyle in place all day. ALWAYS remember to use heat protection spray before using a straightener, curling iron, etc., as this will protect your long hair from damage and maintain its health.

To maintain the perfect wavy hairstyle, it's important to care for your hair correctly. This includes regular trims, which can help remove split ends and keep your hairstyle in top shape. Visit your hairdresser regularly for trims and treatments such as highlights or hair masks to keep your hair in top condition. Also, consider your face shape when pulling your hair back into a bun – this can drastically change the shape of your face! We have a lot of inspiration for hairstyles for long hair here .

    2. Braids in all forms

Braids of all shapes are a great way to style your long hair and can easily be done at home. Here are some of the most popular braids for long hair:

    • French braid: A classic that never goes out of style, the French braid is known for its timeless look and versatility. Start by gathering a small section of hair from the top of your head and divide it into three equal sections. Start braiding the hair by crossing the right section over the centre section and then the left section over the centre section. Next, add small sections of hair from the sides to the braid as you continue to cross the sections over each other. Continue braiding downwards along the head until all the hair is incorporated into the braid. Secure the braid with an elastic when you reach the end of the hair.
    • Fishtail braid: A modern twist on the traditional braid. The fishtail braid is known for its unique and detailed appearance. Start by dividing the hair into two equal sections. Then take a small section of hair from the outer edge of one of the sections and cross it over to the opposite section. Repeat this process, taking a small section from the opposite side and crossing it over to the first section. Continue repeating this pattern down along the head, trying to keep the braid tight and even. Secure the braid with a hair tie when you reach the end of the hair.
    • Dutch braid: Similar to a French braid in appearance but with a subtle difference in technique, the Dutch braid pulls the hair downwards instead of upwards. This creates a braid that stands out from the head for a more voluminous look. Start by gathering a small section of hair from the top of your head and divide it into three equal sections. Start braiding the hair by crossing the right section under the centre section and then the left section under the centre section. Then add small sections of hair from the sides to the braid as you continue to cross the sections under each other. Continue braiding downwards along the head, making sure the braid stands out from the head and creates a voluminous look. Secure the braid with an elastic when you reach the end of the hair.

Whether you want an elegant or more casual look, these braids can bring out the beauty of your long hair without too much effort. See our big guide to braids here .

      3. Create a ponytail with a twist

A ponytail is a classic hairstyle, but with a little twist, you can give it a modern touch. This hairstyle for long hair is both simple and versatile and can be easily adapted for any occasion. Here's how:

      • Take a small section of hair from the underside of the ponytail and twist it around the hair tie to hide it. This little trick gives an elegant and professional appearance.
      • Use a curling iron or straightener to create waves in your hair before putting it into a ponytail for extra volume. This adds fullness to your hairstyle, making your ponytail livelier.
      • Add highlights or color tones to your hair for extra dimension and depth. The play of colors can give your ponytail a more vibrant expression and make it more eye-catching.

Now you have three easy ways to give your traditional ponytail new life. These techniques can transform your everyday hairstyle for long hair into something special, so try them out next time you want something different from your daily setup!

You can also consider using various hair accessories like hair clips, barrettes, or scarves to create a unique hairstyle for long hair.

      4. Curly hair with smooth ends

Curly hair with straight ends is a hairstyle that gives a sophisticated and trendy look for shoulder-length or long hair. This hairstyle for long hair is perfect for those who want a combination of volume and elegance. To achieve this style, start by curling the hair using the heatless curl method, a curling iron, or hot rollers. Choose the method that best suits your hair type and the time available. Then, use your fingers to gently pull at the ends to create a smoother finish and avoid the curls looking too tight. This creates a beautiful contrast between the defined curls and the straight ends, giving your hair a modern and polished appearance.

Remember to use products like wax or serum to care for and define the hair. These products help maintain the curls' shape and shine while keeping the straight ends frizz-free. For those who don't want permanent curls, you can easily create the setup at home using guides from YouTube videos. There are many guides that can help you master this hairstyle for long hair without the need for professional tools. However, it's always best to consult your hairdresser about the best way to cut your long hair, as this will take your face shape and personal preferences into account. Your hairdresser can also advise you on how to best care for your hairstyle for long hair so that it remains beautiful and healthy.

      5. Create a full braided crown hair

To create a full braided hair crown, you must first ensure that you have healthy and well-groomed hair. Use a good shampoo and conditioner, as well as a moisturizing hair treatment at regular intervals. Here we can highly recommend our Healthy Hair Kit , which provides plenty of moisture and care for your hair. Healthy hair is the foundation of any beautiful hairstyle, especially when it comes to more complex setups like a braided crown.

The next step is to pull the hair back into a tight bun at the top of the head. Then divide the hair into two sections and braid them together into one large braid around the bun. Feel free to use small elastics along the way to keep the braid in place.

Finally, you can add extra volume to the hairstyle by gently loosening some of the woven strands in the braid with your fingers. This little trick adds texture and fullness to your hairstyle for long hair, making the braided crown more impressive and full. With these simple steps, you can create a beautiful and voluminous braided crown hairstyle that is perfect for both everyday wear and festive occasions.

      6. Updo hair/bun

A bun can be a great hairstyle for long hair for several reasons:

Elegance: A bun can add a touch of elegance to your style. Whether it's a tight and polished bun or a more loose and relaxed version, this hairstyle can add a sophisticated touch to your look.

Severity: A bun can be styled in many different ways, making it very versatile. You can choose to wear a high bun on top of the head for a more formal look, or you can create a lower bun at the nape of the neck for a more casual look.

Durability: A well-made bun can last all day without the need for constant adjustments. This makes it an ideal hairstyle for long events or long work days where you want to look good all day.

Hairstyle for any occasion: A bun can be appropriate for almost any occasion, from formal events like weddings and parties to more casual occasions like a walk in the park or a day at the office.

Hair protection: By gathering your long hair into a bun, you can protect it from damage caused by wind, sun and friction against clothing. This can be especially useful during warmer months or in harsh weather environments.

Here's an example of a smart and simple bun.

      7. Layers in your hair

Another very popular hairstyle is layered hair. Layers in hair create fantastic play and volume, giving a unique look. This hairstyle is especially suitable for those who want to give their look a little extra life. However, it requires more maintenance than a normal hairstyle, as it requires regular trimming to maintain sharp lines and the desired shape. It has become very popular on social media and fits well for you with long hair. Hairstyles for long hair can often lack volume, but with layers, you can easily get more volume and create a beautiful balance in your look.

There are many different styles of layers, from short bangs to longer ones. This also depends a lot on your hair length and face shape. For instance, longer layers can create a softer and more flowing look, while shorter layers can give more edge and definition. We definitely recommend getting good advice from your hairdresser before you venture into getting layers in your hair, so you can find the perfect hairstyle for long hair that fits your personal style and needs.

      Hairdresser's advice

Hairdresser Nynne Lind answers 3 questions about hairstyles and hair care for long hair. Nynne has over 24 years of experience as a hairdresser, colour master and Hair Talk specialist. See her instagram here.

What hairstyle would you recommend to maximise volume in long hair?

      - I would definitely recommend a volume cut and that means staggering the lengths, also known as layers. Then the Curtis Bangs can also frame the face and the hair appears fuller and the right choice of products and routines are important.

What should I focus on in my hair care regime if I have long hair?

      - Moisturisation and protection and the right routines. Long hair needs moisture and care to stay healthy, so don't wash your hair too often, but when you do, take your time and it will look good for longer. Start by combing your hair before washing, preferably with a hairbrush with natural hair to protect the hair. Always wash your hair twice, squeeze the water out of the hair and apply conditioner to the lengths, I usually say from the ponytail outwards. Use a hair treatment once a week and add it after shampoo and always finish with conditioner... always use a heat protection product when blow-drying, straightening or curling your hair and keep your haircuts straight so your hair is nice and healthy, braid your hair when you go to sleep

What kind of hair accessories do you like to use?

      - I see a lot of people who start with their hair loose and then end up with a bun or a ponytail. I personally like to put my hair half up and gather it with a hair clip with teeth on it.

How to add volume to long hair?

There are several ways to add volume to long hair. Here are some of the most effective methods:

      1. Use a heat roller: Use heat rollers to create volume and waves in the hair. Roll the hair up on the heat rollers and leave it for 10-15 minutes until it cools down. Then take out the heat rollers and release the curls with your fingers. Always remember to use heat protection spray!

      2. Use a diffuser: Use a diffuser when drying your hair with a hair dryer. The diffuser creates a soft air flow which helps to maintain the curls and waves in the hair.

      3. Use a volumizing powder: Use a volumizing powder to add texture and volume to the hair. Apply the powder to the roots of the hair and massage it into the scalp with your fingertips. If possible, try our Volume Powder , it gives your hair a delicious volume immediately.

      4. Use a round brush: Use a round brush to create volume and waves in your hair when drying it with a hairdryer. Use the brush to lift the hair from the scalp and blow dry away from the face. This will create a fuller and voluminous effect.

Whichever method you choose, it's important to make sure your hair is healthy, well-groomed and cared for with the right products. Ask your hairdresser for advice and recommendations to suit your hair type and desired look and follow their guidance to achieve the best result.

      Hair accessories for long hairstyles

What kind of hair accessories and tools should you use to create beautiful hairstyles and updos in long hair? There are a few essentials that are key for creating several of the looks mentioned in this post. Whether you aim for a casual everyday hairstyle or a more formal updo, the right hair accessories can make a big difference. Here, we try to list a few essential items that can give your hairstyle that extra touch:

      • Hairpins
      • Gentle hair elastics
      • Claw clips – Both large and small
      • Hair clips
      • Hairbands
      • Hair scarves.

These accessories are particularly useful when you want to create a beautiful hairstyle for long hair that looks both stylish and well-groomed. With these various types of hair accessories, you are well-equipped to start. Remember to try different combinations of hair accessories to find the style that best suits your hairstyle for long hair.

How should long hair be cut?

Cutting long hair at home can be challenging, but with the right tools and techniques, you can achieve a beautiful and precise result. Start by washing and drying your hair, or dampen it with a spray bottle if you want to cut wet hair, which often gives a more precise result. Comb through your hair thoroughly with a fine-toothed comb to remove knots and tangles. Divide your hair into several sections. Start by dividing the hair from ear to ear across the top of the head and secure the top section with a clip. Then divide the bottom section into two sections, one on each side of the head.

Loosen one of the bottom sections and grab a small section of hair between your fingers. Decide how much you want to cut off and hold the scissors at a slight angle. Cut slowly and carefully to avoid taking off too much at once. Move to the next section and repeat the process, comparing the length of the different sections to ensure an even cut. Once the bottom sections are cut, loosen the top section and repeat the cutting process, making sure the top section blends well with the bottom sections.

Use mirrors to check that the hair is even and symmetrical from all angles. Adjust if necessary. Then go through the hair again and make any necessary adjustments. You can also thin the hair with thinning scissors to create more volume and movement. Be patient and take small sections at a time to avoid mistakes. If you're unsure, it's a good idea to seek help from a professional hairdresser for the first time to guide you through the techniques. With a little practice, you can become proficient at cutting your own long hair and achieve a beautiful and professional result at home. However, long hair can be complicated to cut and therefore a hairdresser is often recommended in most cases.

How to trim split ends in long hair?

Trimming split ends in long hair can be done easily at home. This is particularly useful if you want to maintain a healthy hairstyle for long hair without visiting the hairdresser every time. Start by washing and drying your hair or dampen it slightly. Comb the hair thoroughly to remove knots, as it is important to work with smooth and consistent hair to achieve the best result.

Section the hair; start by sectioning from ear to ear and clip the top portion up. This makes it easier to work with the hair in smaller parts and ensures that you trim all the ends. Take a small section of the lower hair, slide your fingers down to the desired length, and trim about 1-2 cm from the ends. Continue with the rest of the sections, making sure to cut straight and evenly. It's important to be precise, especially with long hair, as uneven edges can be more visible. Repeat the process for the top section. Use a mirror to check that the hair is symmetrical and make any necessary adjustments. This way, you can maintain a beautiful and well-groomed hairstyle for long hair, even when trimming the ends yourself.

How often should you trim long hair?

How often you should trim long hair depends on several factors, but generally, it is recommended to trim the ends every 8-12 weeks. This interval is ideal for maintaining a healthy hairstyle for long hair as it helps prevent split ends and maintains the overall health of the hair. If you have very damaged or chemically treated hair, it may be necessary to trim it more often, perhaps every 6-8 weeks, as these hair types tend to be weaker and more prone to developing split ends.

For those who want to maintain the length or grow their hair out, a trim every 12-16 weeks may be sufficient as long as the hair is healthy and does not have many split ends. However, longer intervals between trims may require more intensive care, such as deep conditioning and hair masks, to keep the hair strong. Regular trims are important for maintaining the hair’s health and appearance, especially when it comes to a hairstyle for long hair, where damage can be more visible and have a greater impact on the overall look.
