Summary: We spoke to Dilan Joumaa about her and her amazing natural curly hair.

1. Who is Dilan?
Who is Dilan? My name is Dilan, I am 33 years old and live in Valby, where I work in marketing. I grew up in Jutland, but my roots are in Kurdistan. Kurdish culture is rich in art, poetry and beauty, and it is a culture where creativity is celebrated and encouraged in countless ways, which has had a profound impact on me.
Today, I run @Curlioumaa on both Instagram and TikTok, where I document my personal journey with my natural curls.
It wasn't until I was 27 that I really realised I actually had curls! It was a revelation, and I took a big step – literally – by getting what is known as a “big chop”. This means cutting off all the damaged and straightened hair and starting from scratch with your natural hair. During that period, I looked like Sideshow Bob from The Simpsons, but luckily I had my eyes on the prize and was able to stick with the short hair. It was a pretty wild moment, and from then on, my curly journey really took off.

2. What hair problems have you had?
Over the years, I've learned a lot about my hair and the challenges it brings. In the past, humidity was a huge challenge for me – my hair would frizz up and become difficult to control as soon as there was even a hint of moisture in the air.
My hair has also always been incredibly thick, which made it difficult and time-consuming to style.
It took forever to brush through, and even after a long styling process, it was difficult to keep it looking good throughout the day. Dryness and frizz were another big challenge I struggled with for many years. My hair felt constantly dry and lifeless, and it was difficult to make it look healthy and shiny.
However, one of the biggest lessons I've learned over the years has been my journey towards accepting and identifying with my curls. For many years, I straightened my hair and became so used to the straight style that it felt strange to see my natural curls. It has taken time, but with the knowledge and experience I have gained, I have now found the joy of embracing my natural hair and have learned how to best care for and enhance my curls.

3. How has this affected you?
The challenges I've had with my hair have affected me in several ways over the years. Firstly, it's been frustrating to feel like I had no control over my own hair.
When humidity ruined a whole day's styling in minutes, or when it took forever to brush and style it because of its thickness, it often felt like a daily struggle. But what affected me the most was how difficult it was to identify with my natural curls. After so many years of straightened hair, it almost felt like I was missing a part of my identity when I started embracing my natural hair. It took time to get used to, and at first I didn't feel quite like myself when I looked in the mirror.

4. What do you love about your hair?
What I love most about my hair is how unique it is. My curls have a very special character and personality that I can't help but admire. They have a life of their own, and I've learned to see that as a strength. At first, it was a bit of a battle between me and my curls, where I tried to control them and make them behave. However, my curls have proven to be more stubborn than I am, and over time I've learned that the best thing I can do is let go of control and let them do their thing.
Now I love the freedom that comes with letting my curls find their own way. When I give them space to unfold naturally, they look their best, and that has taught me to be more at peace with myself. I love how my curls can be so vibrant and full one day and a little wilder the next – it makes them part of my personality. Embracing that spontaneity has given me a new kind of confidence and a feeling that my hair is something truly special.

5. Which Yuaia Haircare products do you like best?
The Twirl and Curl set is definitely my absolute favourite. Curly Cream provides plenty of moisture for my hair, but the product that has really won my heart is the Sea Salt Spray. It acts as a sealing gel and is incredibly effective.
Because it's a spray, you avoid disturbing your freshly styled curls by having to apply a gel with your hands. As with a regular gel, it's a good idea to “crunch” your hair when it's dry to “break the cast” and get the softest, most defined curls.
I also love Yuaia's Curved Paddle Brush. Even though my hair is sometimes (especially on wash day) a big bird's nest filled with products and really needs a wash, this brush still manages to detangle my hair without pain or a 30-minute arm workout. It's incredibly effective and gentle, and I love products that save time – it makes the whole curling experience so much more fun!
