Hair serum for dry and frizzy hair: choosing and using it

A serum for the lengths can help smooth frizz, add shine and make hair feel softer and easier to manage. Choose according to your hair's needs and the product directions. Dryness and frizz are different, even when they occur together; your routine may need conditioner as well as a finishing product.

What can serum do for frizz?

A smoothing serum can soften the appearance of flyaways and add shine to the lengths. Results depend on the formula, amount and condition of your hair. It does not necessarily make hair completely frizz-free in humid weather or permanently join split ends back together.

Dry hair: start with conditioning

If the lengths feel rough or dry, use serum alongside shampoo, conditioner and, where appropriate, a hair mask according to its directions. Condition the lengths and detangle gently. A finishing product may improve softness but does not automatically replace this care. See our guide to hydrating your hair.

Choose by hair type and texture

Fine hair: Start with a small amount of a light product on the ends. Avoid adding layers if hair loses volume. Thick or coarse hair: Work in sections and add a little at a time. Curly hair: Use serum alongside the styling that provides your preferred definition; it does not necessarily replace curl cream or gel.

An ingredient list is a starting point, not a guarantee. Oils, silicones and other conditioning ingredients appear in different formulas. A serum is not always lighter than an oil, and protein or keratin does not automatically make a product right for your hair. Assess the whole formula and the result of a small dose.

What’s your go-to solution for managing frizzy hair?
Hair serum for frizz control

Oil-based treatments like argan or coconut oil
Heat protectant sprays and tools
I use a mix of different products depending on the day

A simple five-step routine

Wash and condition as needed. Gently squeeze out excess water without rubbing. Follow the directions for damp or dry hair. Spread a small amount between your hands and through the lengths and ends, avoiding the scalp if the product is only for the lengths. Style as directed and assess the result before applying more.

For touch-ups, use a little on dry ends if the product is intended for that use. Detangle gently from the ends upwards; avoid vigorous brushing of dry curls if you want to preserve their shape.

Heat protection and other styling products

Serum does not automatically provide heat protection. Before a hairdryer, straighteners or a curling iron, use a product with explicitly stated heat protection and follow its directions. When combining serum, leave-in conditioner, mousse or gel, follow each product's application instructions; there is no single order for every formula.

Serum for the lengths is different from scalp serum. Apply scalp products directly to the scalp as directed, rather than choosing them as substitutes for smoothing serum on the ends.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use serum every day?

Only if it suits your hair and the product directions. If hair feels flat, greasy or coated, reduce the amount and frequency instead of adding more.

Should I wash serum out?

Many serums for the lengths are leave-in products and stay in the hair until the next wash. Always follow the specific product directions.

Is serum better than oil for dry hair?

Neither is always better. Both may be finishing or care products depending on their formula. Choose what makes your lengths softer and easier to style without unnecessary weight.
