What can hair oil do for dry hair?
A suitable hair oil can make dry lengths feel softer, add shine and soften the appearance of frizz. Oil does not add water or replace conditioner. The effect is cosmetic: it does not permanently repair split ends, and using an oil is not in itself evidence of new hair growth.
Choose by formula and desired finish
Argan oil, jojoba, coconut oil and castor oil are different ingredients, but the properties of a finished hair oil depend on the whole formula and amount. Choose according to whether it is for the scalp, pre-wash treatment or finishing the lengths. Pure essential oil is different from formulated hair oil and should not be used undiluted. An ingredient name does not establish hair growth, heat protection or split-end repair.
Adapt to fine, coarse or curly hair
Fine hair often needs a smaller amount and a lighter finish. Coarse or curly lengths may have different needs, but assess the result rather than following a fixed rule to use more oil. Porosity alone does not determine the right product. If hair clumps into greasy strands or loses movement, reduce the amount or the number of layers.
How often should you use hair oil?
No weekly frequency suits everyone. Adapt to the directions, scalp needs, washing and how quickly lengths become coated. A pre-wash treatment and a little finishing oil on ends are different uses. Daily use is not necessarily better, and you do not need more on days when hair already feels appropriately conditioned.
