Choose hold for your hairstyle
- Light or flexible hold when you want movement.
- Firmer hold when the shape needs a more defined set.
- A finish and amount that suit your hair without unnecessary weight.
Fine hair does not automatically need strong hold, and thick hair does not always need more product. Start sparingly. Alcohol content or another single ingredient cannot alone establish whether the whole formula suits you.
How to apply hairspray
- Shape your style and finish any heat styling before using an ordinary finishing hairspray.
- Check whether the product is intended for dry or damp hair, and follow the instructions on how far away to hold the spray and how much to use.
- Apply a little evenly rather than soaking one section. Allow it to set before deciding whether you need more.
- Avoid dragging a brush through a hardened style. Restyle only as the product directions allow.
- Follow the bottle's safety directions for ventilation, eyes and sources of heat.
Hairspray is not automatically heat protection
Hold and heat protection are different functions. Only rely on a product for heat protection if it is specifically designed for that purpose, and follow its instructions. Do not use ordinary hairspray in place of heat protection before using straighteners or curling irons.
When using Style and Shine Heat Protection for heat styling, follow the product's instructions. It has a different role from a finishing spray. Avoid unnecessarily high heat and follow appliance instructions too.
Other styling products have different jobs
Gel is used for shape and hold during styling, while hairspray often provides the final set. They are not always directly interchangeable. Choose according to the specific formula and your intended result.
Hair and Brow Stick is used for small targeted adjustments to flyaways and brows. Volume powder adds lift and texture at the roots. These products are shown for specific styling needs, not as ordinary hairspray or cleansers.
Dealing with hairspray residue
If hair feels coated or sticky, review the amount and washing routine. Use a suitable shampoo as directed and rinse thoroughly. Follow with conditioner, taking into account the needs of your hair and the product instructions.
Do not add oil or more styling products to disguise residue. Not everyone needs to wash their hair daily or use a clarifying shampoo as a matter of course; check whether your hair and scalp are getting clean.
