What is peppermint oil?
Peppermint oil is a concentrated essential oil from Mentha piperita. It contains menthol, which can produce a cooling sensation. It differs from a conditioning oil such as jojoba oil and from a formulated hair product in which peppermint oil is just one ingredient.
Does peppermint oil help hair growth?
An often-cited 2014 study investigated peppermint oil in mice. It does not establish faster hair growth or regrowth in people. A cooling or tingling sensation is not proof that follicles are being activated either. Do not use an animal experiment as a recipe or as a basis for an expected treatment timeline.
Dilution: follow the instructions for your specific product
Do not apply pure peppermint essential oil directly to your scalp. Choose a product intended for hair or scalp use and follow its directions. There is no universal number of drops suitable for every oil and skin type. Do not add oil yourself to a whole shampoo bottle or a formulated hair mask.
Fitting it into your routine
First check whether the product is intended to be rinsed out or left in. Apply only the recommended amount to the specified area, massaging gently with your fingertips if directed. Rinse and wash as instructed. Avoid eyes, mucous membranes and broken skin; more oil or harder massage has no proven extra benefit.
How often – and can it stay on overnight?
Follow the product’s instructions on how often to use it and how long to leave it on, rather than a blanket recommendation to use it several times a week. Do not leave a mixture on overnight unless the specific product is intended for that use. Stop if it burns, itches or causes redness. Testing a small area cannot guarantee that you will never react later.
Sensitive scalp and other considerations
Peppermint oil can cause skin irritation or rashes. Avoid it if you know you react to menthol or peppermint, and seek advice if you have eczema or other scalp problems. Do not apply the oil to infants’ or young children’s faces. If irritation, dandruff or hair loss persists, seek a professional assessment of the cause rather than adding more essential oils.
Choose care for your needs
If you simply want to cleanse your scalp and condition your lengths, choose an ordinary shampoo and conditioner suited to your hair. This does not require peppermint oil. Conditioning oils and products containing rosemary or other ingredients must be assessed separately; findings for one ingredient or experimental blend cannot be transferred to a different finished product.
Frequently asked questions
How quickly can I expect more hair?
There is no established time to regrowth in people using peppermint oil. Promises of visible results after a set number of weeks are therefore not a reliable basis for choosing a product.
What if peppermint oil stings?
Stop using it and gently wash the product off. Seek medical advice for a severe or persistent reaction. Stinging is not a sign that the product is working.
