Do you have long hair but want a change in your hairstyle? Here are five different hairstyles for long hair that you can cut yourself at home. With these tips and tricks, you can give your look a new lease of life without having to visit a salon or pay expensive judgments for professional help. Read on and get inspired to try new styles!

    5 hairstyles for long hair

Looking for new hairstyle ideas for your long hair? Then you must own these hairstyles. Loose and wavy hair is a classic that suits all face shapes and requires minimal maintenance. If you need a little more structure in your look, try making braids in different variations - from the traditional braid to half braids or a fishtail look. You can see our big guide to braids here .

A simple way to give your ponytail a twist is to pull a small tuft of hair around the elastic and secure it with a bobby pin. You can also experiment with curls - create beautiful soft waves using guides or streaks before styling the ends smooth. And if you want extra volume, try creating a full braided bun using wax, gel and other hair products. With these tips, you don't have to go to the hairdresser every time!

    1. Loose and wavy hair

Create a relaxed look with loose and wavy hair. This hairstyle is perfect for those who want an easy and quick setup that still looks stylish. To get wavy hair, you can use heatless curls , curling irons or straighteners to create soft waves in your long hair. A good hairspray can help keep the hairstyle in place all day. REMEMBER to always use heat protection spray before using heat styling tools.

Loose and wavy hair is easy to style, but requires proper care to stay perfectly wavy throughout the day.

To maintain the perfect wavy hairstyle, it is important to care for your hair properly. Visit your hairdresser regularly for haircuts and treatments such as streaks or hair treatments to keep your hair in top shape. Also, be aware of your face shape when pulling your hair back into a bun - this can change the shape of your face dramatically! We have a lot of inspiration for hairstyles for long hair here .

    2. Braids in all forms

Braids of all shapes are a great way to style your long hair and can easily be done at home. Here are some of the most popular braids for long hair:

    • French braid: A classic that never goes out of style, the French braid is known for its timeless look and versatility. Start by gathering a small section of hair from the top of your head and divide it into three equal sections. Start braiding the hair by crossing the right section over the centre section and then the left section over the centre section. Next, add small sections of hair from the sides to the braid as you continue to cross the sections over each other. Continue braiding downwards along the head until all the hair is incorporated into the braid. Secure the braid with an elastic when you reach the end of the hair.
    • Herringbone braid: A modern twist on the traditional braid, the herringbone braid is known for its unique and detailed look. Start by dividing your hair into two equal sections. Then take a small section of hair from the edge of one section and cross it over to the opposite section. Repeat this process, but take a small section from the opposite side and cross it over to the first section. Continue to repeat this pattern downwards along the head, trying to keep the braid tight and even. Secure the braid with an elastic when you reach the end of the hair.
    • Dutch braid: Similar to a French braid in appearance but with a subtle difference in technique, the Dutch braid pulls the hair downwards instead of upwards. This creates a braid that stands out from the head for a more voluminous look. Start by gathering a small section of hair from the top of your head and divide it into three equal sections. Start braiding the hair by crossing the right section under the centre section and then the left section under the centre section. Then add small sections of hair from the sides to the braid as you continue to cross the sections under each other. Continue braiding downwards along the head, making sure the braid stands out from the head and creates a voluminous look. Secure the braid with an elastic when you reach the end of the hair.

Whether you want an elegant or more casual look, these braids can bring out the beauty of your long hair without too much effort. See our big guide to braids here .

      3. Create a ponytail with a twist

A ponytail is a classic hairstyle, but with a little twist you can give it a modern touch. Here's how:

      • Pull a small tuft of hair from the underside of the ponytail and wrap it around the elastic to hide it.
      • Use a curling iron or straightener to create waves in your hair before putting it up in a ponytail for added volume.
      • Add streaks or tints to your hair for added dimension and depth.

Now you have three easy ways to give your traditional ponytail a new lease of life. So try them out the next time you want something different from your daily setup!

You can also consider using different kinds of hair accessories such as hair clips, barrettes or scarves for your hair to create a unique look. Hair clips in particular can be a great idea if you need a little more volume in your ponytail.

      4. Curly hair with smooth ends

Curly hair with smooth ends is a hairstyle that gives a sophisticated and trendy look to shoulder length or long hair. To achieve this style, first curl the hair using the heatless curl method or with a curling iron or heat rollers. Then use your fingers to gently pull the ends to create a smoother finish and avoid the curls looking too tight. Remember to also use products such as wax or serum to care for and define the hair.

For those who do not want permanent curls, you can easily do the setup at home using guides from YouTube videos. However, it is always best to consult your hairstylist about the best way to cut your long hair, as this will take into account your face shape as well as personal preference.

      5. Create a full braided crown hair

To create a full braided hair crown, you must first ensure that you have healthy and well-groomed hair. Use a good shampoo and conditioner, as well as a moisturizing hair treatment at regular intervals. Here we can highly recommend our Healthy Hair Kit , which provides plenty of moisture and care for your hair.

The next step is to pull the hair back into a tight bun at the top of the head. Then divide the hair into two sections and braid them together into one large braid around the bun. Feel free to use small elastics along the way to keep the braid in place. Finally, you can give the hairstyle extra volume by gently loosening some of the woven strands in the braid with your fingers.

      6. Updo hair/bun

A bun can be a great hairstyle for long hair for several reasons:

Elegance: A bun can add a touch of elegance to your style. Whether it's a tight and polished bun or a more loose and relaxed version, this hairstyle can add a sophisticated touch to your look.

Severity: A bun can be styled in many different ways, making it very versatile. You can choose to wear a high bun on top of the head for a more formal look, or you can create a lower bun at the nape of the neck for a more casual look.

Durability: A well-made bun can last all day without the need for constant adjustments. This makes it an ideal hairstyle for long events or long work days where you want to look good all day.

Hairstyle for any occasion: A bun can be appropriate for almost any occasion, from formal events like weddings and parties to more casual occasions like a walk in the park or a day at the office.

Hair protection: By gathering your long hair into a bun, you can protect it from damage caused by wind, sun and friction against clothing. This can be especially useful during warmer months or in harsh weather environments.

Here's an example of a smart and simple bun.

      7. Layers in your hair

Another very popular hairstyle is the layered hairstyle. Layering your hair creates an amazing amount of play and volume for a unique look. However, the hairstyle requires a little more maintenance than a normal hairstyle. It has become very popular on social media and really suits those with long hair. There are many different styles of hair layers, from very short bangs to slightly longer ones. This also depends a lot on your hair length and face shape. We definitely recommend getting advice from your hairdresser before you embark on the journey of getting your hair layered.

      Hairdresser's advice

Hairdresser Nynne Lind answers 3 questions about hairstyles and hair care for long hair. Nynne has over 24 years of experience as a hairdresser, colour master and Hair Talk specialist. See her instagram here.

What hairstyle would you recommend to maximise volume in long hair?

      - I would definitely recommend a volume cut and that means staggering the lengths, also known as layers. Then the Curtis Bangs can also frame the face and the hair appears fuller and the right choice of products and routines are important.

What should I focus on in my hair care regime if I have long hair?

      - Moisturisation and protection and the right routines. Long hair needs moisture and care to stay healthy, so don't wash your hair too often, but when you do, take your time and it will look good for longer. Start by combing your hair before washing, preferably with a hairbrush with natural hair to protect the hair. Always wash your hair twice, squeeze the water out of the hair and apply conditioner to the lengths, I usually say from the ponytail outwards. Use a hair treatment once a week and add it after shampoo and always finish with conditioner... always use a heat protection product when blow-drying, straightening or curling your hair and keep your haircuts straight so your hair is nice and healthy, braid your hair when you go to sleep

What kind of hair accessories do you like to use?

      - I see a lot of people who start with their hair loose and then end up with a bun or a ponytail. I personally like to put my hair half up and gather it with a hair clip with teeth on it.

How to add volume to long hair?

There are several ways to add volume to long hair. Here are some of the most effective methods:

      1. Use a heat roller: Use heat rollers to create volume and waves in the hair. Roll the hair up on the heat rollers and leave it for 10-15 minutes until it cools down. Then take out the heat rollers and release the curls with your fingers. Always remember to use heat protection spray!

      2. Use a diffuser: Use a diffuser when drying your hair with a hair dryer. The diffuser creates a soft air flow which helps to maintain the curls and waves in the hair.

      3. Use a volumizing powder: Use a volumizing powder to add texture and volume to the hair. Apply the powder to the roots of the hair and massage it into the scalp with your fingertips. If possible, try our Volume Powder , it gives your hair a delicious volume immediately.

      4. Use a round brush: Use a round brush to create volume and waves in your hair when drying it with a hairdryer. Use the brush to lift the hair from the scalp and blow dry away from the face. This will create a fuller and voluminous effect.

Whichever method you choose, it's important to make sure your hair is healthy, well-groomed and cared for with the right products. Ask your hairdresser for advice and recommendations to suit your hair type and desired look and follow their guidance to achieve the best result.

      Hair accessories for long hairstyles

What kind of hairpieces and accessories do you need to create great long hairstyles and updos? There are a number of things that are pretty essential for creating many of the looks we've discussed in this post. Here we'll try to list a few essentials that can give your hairstyle that extra edge:

      • Hairpins
      • Gentle hair elastics
      • Hair clips - both big and small
      • Hair clips
      • Hair bows
      • Scarf for your hair

With these different kinds of hair ornaments and accessories, you're off to a pretty good start.

How should long hair be cut?

Cutting long hair at home can be challenging, but with the right tools and techniques, you can achieve a beautiful and precise result. Start by washing and drying your hair, or dampen it with a spray bottle if you want to cut wet hair, which often gives a more precise result. Comb through your hair thoroughly with a fine-toothed comb to remove knots and tangles. Divide your hair into several sections. Start by dividing the hair from ear to ear across the top of the head and secure the top section with a clip. Then divide the bottom section into two sections, one on each side of the head.

Loosen one of the bottom sections and grab a small section of hair between your fingers. Decide how much you want to cut off and hold the scissors at a slight angle. Cut slowly and carefully to avoid taking off too much at once. Move to the next section and repeat the process, comparing the length of the different sections to ensure an even cut. Once the bottom sections are cut, loosen the top section and repeat the cutting process, making sure the top section blends well with the bottom sections.

Use mirrors to check that the hair is even and symmetrical from all angles. Adjust if necessary. Then go through the hair again and make any necessary adjustments. You can also thin the hair with thinning scissors to create more volume and movement. Be patient and take small sections at a time to avoid mistakes. If you're unsure, it's a good idea to seek help from a professional hairdresser for the first time to guide you through the techniques. With a little practice, you can become proficient at cutting your own long hair and achieve a beautiful and professional result at home. However, long hair can be complicated to cut and therefore a hairdresser is often recommended in most cases.

How do I cut the ends of long hair?

Cutting the ends of long hair can be done easily at home. Start by washing and drying your hair or lightly moisturise it. Straighten hair thoroughly to remove knots. Divide the hair into sections; start by dividing from ear to ear and secure the top section with a clip. Take a small section of the bottom hair, slide your fingers down to the desired length and clip about 1-2cm off the ends. Continue with the rest of the sections, making sure to cut straight and evenly. Repeat the process for the top section. Use a mirror to check that the hair is symmetrical and make any necessary adjustments.

How often should you cut long hair?

How often you should cut long hair depends on several factors, but generally it is recommended to trim the ends every 8-12 weeks. This helps prevent split ends and keeps hair healthy. If you have very damaged or chemically treated hair, you may need to cut it more often, perhaps every 6-8 weeks. For those who want to maintain length or grow their hair out, a cut every 12-16 weeks may be sufficient as long as the hair is healthy and doesn't have many split ends. Regular haircuts are important to maintain hair health and appearance.

      Product recommendations

To create a beautiful hairstyle with long hair, here are some product recommendations to help you spruce up your hair.

      Curved Paddle Brush

A deliciously gentle hairbrush with a combination of boar hair and nylon spikes. It helps to distribute the hair's natural oils throughout the hair for a beautiful, shiny look. It's also great for gripping all types of hair, which you can use for a wide range of hairstyles, for example if you want to make a sleek back ponytail.

      Hair clips

Hair clips are brilliant for a multitude of hairstyles. With hair clips, you can create many different combinations and hairstyles that can give you the look you want. This is one of the reasons why hair clips have become so popular lately.

      Curl cream

Do you have natural fall or curls in your hair? Then a good curl cream is a must. Curls are one of the most beautiful hairstyles there is, with their vibrant play and stunningly beautiful expression. To define the curls, we highly recommend our Twirl and Curl Curly Cream. A unique moisturising curl cream with nourishing ingredients for long-lasting hold and soft, beautiful curls. It is of course Curly Girl Approved and contains delicious ingredients such as almond oil, hydrolysed keratin and rice protein.

      Bamboo pillowcase

Do you often have morning hair? Then it might be a good idea to switch to a bamboo pillowcase. With its finer fibres and smooth surface, it reduces friction in your hair when you sleep. It protects your hair, but also makes your hair much easier to style in the morning. Our bamboo pillowcase is made from some of the best bamboo material that is OEKO-TEX 100 certified.

      Heat protection

Heat protection is very important for your hair if you need heat styling to get the long hairstyle you want. Style and Shine Heat Protection Spray is a unique heat protection spray that provides up to 220 degrees heat protection, UV protection for the hair and is silicone-free. This means that the product does not build up in the hair and can easily be washed out again.
